British Birds Set 9 Grebes and Rails
No other birds’ eggs are so susceptible to staining than those of our Grebes and Rails. By their very nature of the nesting materials used, such as reeds, weed and rotting vegetation, freshly laid eggs soon discolour greatly. This rotting, composting technique, like all marvels of nature, is put to good use and generates heat for the eggs when the parents are absent from the nest.
This collection shows the commonly seen eggs of the Moorhen and Coot to the eggs of rare and magnificent divers. As with all of these collections the eggs are shown actual size and true discolouration is shown particularly with the Grebes eggs.
