The Great Auk

Britains last extinct bird. Due to its ease of capture and persecution, we finally lost the only remaining breeding pair in 1844. The egg is unbelievably large for a bird which stood a good 30" in height. It has the familiar pear shaped appearance which enabled the egg to remain on the cliff ledges and not to roll in strong weather or be dislodged by clambering webbed feet.

Its adaption so completely to the aquatic life meant that it could no longer fly, fisherman who mercilessly slaughtered them for food and bait undoubtedly helped to its final dimise.

A fitting tribute to a legend of a bird, this cased single egg will create a talking point for years to come.

Replica egg orders - due to an overwhelming demand, I am afraid I can NO LONGER take orders for Christmas 2011. The prints are fine and can be sent out right up til Christmas last post.
